TWO LAWS

For the law of the SPIRIT OF LIFE in Christ Jesus hath MADE ME FREE from the law of SIN AND DEATH. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was WEAK THROUGH THE FLESH, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, CONDEMNED SIN IN THE FLESH: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk NOT AFTER THE FLESH, but AFTER THE SPIRIT. 5 For they that are after the flesh do MIND the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the THINGS OF THE SPIRIT. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then THEY THAT ARE IN THE FLESH CANNOT PLEASE GOD.
ROMANS 8:2-8
Paul lays out TWO LAWS here:
1. The LAW of the SPIRIT OF LIFE in CHRIST JESUS.
AND
2. The LAW of SIN AND DEATH.
The subject is about which one a person is FOLLOWING. He makes the CLEAR statement that those who follow the LAW OF SIN AND DEATH MIND (OBEY) the things of the flesh but those who are SPIRITUALLY MINDED OBEY the things of the SPIRIT which bears the fruit of LIFE AND PEACE.
This is where MANY people get hung up. They believe that if you believe in ETERNAL SECURITY you are believing that you can continue to SIN and STILL BE SAVED. But Paul is saying here that those who follow after the SPIRIT will be OBEYING the things of the SPIRIT. Clearly then, those who continue to SIN are following after the law of SIN AND DEATH, NOT THE SPIRIT. He says that these CANNOT PLEASE GOD. These people were spoken of in HEBREWS 6. They bore thorns and briars and were fit to be burned. But those who had the things that ACCOMPANY SALVATION are NOT CONDEMNED.
He teaches in more detail to the GALATIANS:
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And THEY THAT ARE CHRIST'S have CRUCIFIED THE FLESH with the affections and lusts.
GALATIANS 5:16
So then, when a person is born of the Spirit, He will be SPIRITUALLY MINDED and obey the things of the SPIRIT, NOT the things of the flesh like EXALTING his own works above the works of others, which is pride. He will not GLORIFY or try to SATISFY the flesh like ARGUING and DISPUTING about VAIN things that bear NO FRUIT of the Spirit. He that follows after SPIRITUAL things will NOT FACE CONDEMNATION because he has TESTIFIED by his own actions that the SPIRIT is TRUTH. But those who follow after the things of the flesh have TESTIFIED that the FLESH is his MASTER.
